Located on level 4 of State Library of Queensland, the John Oxley Library holds collections that are unique to Queensland’s history and heritage.
The Heritage Collections is a quiet space for research, where you can work with original materials such as diaries, manuscripts, artworks, and maps. A separate quiet study area also provides individual study space with stunning views of the Brisbane River.
About the collection
Named after the explorer John Oxley, the John Oxley Library documents Queensland’s past through:
- original manuscripts and diaries
- business and station records
- artworks and photographs
- maps and architectural plans
- books, newspapers, magazines and ephemera.
Collections are acquired through legal deposit, donations, and selective purchasing. Learn more about State Library’s Guidelines for the Memory Collections.
Access and preservation
To help preserve these heritage materials, items in the John Oxley Library are not available for loan. Visitors can access both physical and digital collections onsite, and State Library members can request items via the catalogue.
To protect collection items in the Heritage Collections Reading Room, please note:
- no food or drink
- no bags
- no pens
There is a quiet study space in the John Oxley Library with views over the Brisbane River. Bottled water and bags are permitted in this area.
